"It thrived when all the rest barely survived!"
The “Mother” tree of Grizzly Clonal Walnut Rootstock™ shown above is a Tulare variety grafted onto a seedling Paradox rootstock. It thrived when all the rest barely survived in an orchard that faces many challenges. Our early data indicates this rootstock is indeed a bigger, tougher more productive tree. The orchard was planted in the 90’s as a replant site after removal of extremely large Serr Trees. Much of the orchard is very sandy soil, so the replants had to contend with replant disorder, heavy populations of lesion nematodes, generally low nutrition and poor soil structure. It’s no wonder that the average walnut tree struggles! It is from this orchard that we found and cloned Grizzly Clonal Walnut Rootstock™
FIELD TRIALS
GRIZZLY IN THE FIELD
Trials are showing that Grizzly supports a bigger, more productive tree in multiple types of conditions. Photo above represents replants in 3rd leaf of Chandler on Grizzly (right) compared to Chandler on VX211 (left) in a nematode affected block.
Observation suggests that Grizzly’s superiority may be, in part, due to its aggressive and powerful root architecture. More roots equals more tree!
